What is a CSR (Certificate Signing Request)?

A Certificate Signing Request (CSR) is a block of encoded text that contains information about the entity requesting a digital certificate and the public key. It's sent to a Certificate Authority (CA) to apply for an SSL/TLS certificate.

Important: Keep your private key secure! Never share it with anyone. The private key is required to install your certificate and enable HTTPS on your server.

CSR Fields Explained

Equivalent OpenSSL Command

openssl req -new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes \ -keyout server.key -out server.csr \ -subj "/C=US/ST=California/L=San Francisco/O=ACME Corp/CN=www.example.com"

Next Steps

  1. Submit the CSR to a Certificate Authority (CA) like Let's Encrypt, DigiCert, or Comodo
  2. Complete the domain validation process required by the CA
  3. Download and install the issued certificate along with your private key
  4. Configure your web server (Apache, Nginx, IIS) to use the certificate
